Any witches and warlocks out there? by BBC’s Mark Mardell–Obviously many of you don’t like the European Union very much but these pages so far have been free of those who think the EU is a sign of the coming of the end of the world.However, there are plenty of sites out there who see Brussels as the seat of the Antichrist.

So, I am of course ever on the alert for any signs of witches and warlocks haunting the corridors of power. So what do you make of the fact that Commissioner Margot Walstrom’s spokesperson is a leading exponent of Pagan Rock?

This video kind of grows on you after a time as well as provide an interesting glimpse into the European side of the wiccan craft. There was a nice presentation on the Constitution of the United States of America… Too bad its been so violated in the name of preservation of Iraqi freedom…  Which seems to be, as much as an attack on American Constitutional freedoms as any hostage that they might happen to find.  The only conviction  so far seems to be Osama bin Laden’s chauffeur driver.  Sara Palin, with all this “Country First” nonsense, asked if we think we should “read the Terrorist their rights”… Well it might be asking a bit too much but maybe its a good idea before you go torturing these poor saps to death.  Is it too much to ask for some of these people in positions of power to put The Constitution first?

As far as the Cern super particle accelerator… Ya know it might be nice to have a little Black Hole to hang around the house (that is of course if you can afford to have your house devoured every nano second or so).  Still you all know this IS NOT going to happen because the Cern CyberSpace Martians are going to need an extra 4 trillion watts (give or take a few billion).  We all know to get to the real black hole it takes an infinite amount of money to build a really big Supercollider you’re going to need to start with something like Lehman Brother or better yet a Bear Stearns with a ring collar the size of a Fannie Mae and Freddy Mac then you’ll see what a Black hole is truly like…

Kinda of makes all that Pagan Dance and AntiChrist nonsense seem rather quaint.

More than 60 experts on witchcraft from across the world are gathering in a tiny Arctic town in northern Norway.

For three days in Vardo they will have discussions, lectures and the odd film show on ancient and modern sorcery.

The International Midnight Sun Witchcraft Conference is organised by Scandinavian and US universities.

Organizers say persecution is a thing of the past in Europe, but in parts of Africa and Asia men, women and children are still accused of witchcraft.

However since most of the traditions (namely what we now call Gardnerian and Alexandrian traditions) begs the question why Norway? Why now?

Maybe something to do with the widly popular Harry Potter books and film set for release today.

Perhaps because it serves to set the ambiance as during a 17th-Century it was the witch-hunt in Vardo, where a heinous crime committed about 80 women to being burnt at the stake.

Reports from the time indicated they were accused of meeting with the devil at the nearby “witch mountain”.

During the 16th and 17th centuries it is estimated that up to 50,000 people were executed for alleged sorcery across Europe.

The only pattern that seems to fit is that its part of this Global warming trend  towards overall “Global Weirdness”… I mean Norway IS in the Artic circle:) Circles being what they are looks like we are not alone in this circle of thought. As the sumit of the Midnight Sun makes for very interesting circles outside of Hollywood.

The dismal failure of leadership in a world driven by profits over prosperity, it is feared, has already taken us over the edge as far as 90% of the scientific community is concerned. A sizable chunk of polar ice at the Arctic region in addition to a piece of the Ross Ice Shelf at the Antarctic region larger than Rhode Island is pause for grave concern for all the people of this tiny planet…. A wake up call, for the world, if you wish. Desperate times indeed may call for desperate measures.

In the photo above indicates the present and and the future projections of the Arctic region two decades from now… Some scientist believe that it could happen even sooner. We are in unknown and uncharted waters the consequences of miscalculation are catastrophic and indeed may well spell the end of civilization as we have known it.

In a related story The BBC landed with a team of researchers to plant a tracking beam at the Eureka High Arctic Weather Station, Canada to follow the Ayles Ice Island that broke away from the Canadian Arctic coast in 2005. This is the first time this event has occurred in at least 3,000 years. Scientists in the Arctic have just carried out the first research on a huge iceberg the size of Manhattan.

We approached the island in a small plane. From the air, the vast expanse of white stood out as unusually smooth compared with the much rougher sea ice that forms and thaws with the changing seasons.

The island’s surface was judged safe enough to land on - our plane was fitted with skis - and after a bumpy touchdown we ground to a halt, the first expedition of its kind.

Soon the scientists were at work - time was limited with the risk of the weather changing.

First, Dr Derek Mueller of the University of Alaska Fairbanks dug down through the surface layer of snow to reach the mass of the ice below.

Then he and Dr Luke Copland, of the University of Ottawa, carried out a series of measurements using a ground-penetrating radar.

They found that the average of thickness of the ice was 42-45m (138-148ft) - the equivalent of the height of a 10-storey building.

This was slightly thicker than expected.

One implication is that the island is may prove even more durable than predicted - the sheer weight of ice estimated at two billion tonnes may take longer to melt than initially thought.

Two thousand years before Christ is depictions of the Norse Pantheon of Gods in celebration of the winter solstice… This is the time in the Northern Hemisphere, when the sun is directly overhead at noon only along the Tropic of Capricorn.  The Sun will appear directly overhead for the next three days in places such as Sao Paulo, Brazil, southern Madagascar, and areas north of Brisbane, Australia.  Some ancient structures in ancient Ireland are clearly set specifically built for this celebration and are older than Stonehenge and the ancient Pyramids of Egypt. These are among the hundreds of megalithic structures that are scattered across Europe, Americas, Asia and even found in the sub-Saharan Africa Zimbabwe region sometimes called the “African Stonehenge” of the lost tribe.

In celebration in the rebirth of the Sun (Or as Christians know as “The birth of the Son”). apple wassailing, the medieval winter festival custom of blessing the apple trees with songs, dances, decorations and a drink of cider to ensure their fertility… This too predates the Christian traditions that have found its way into our Christmas Carols Songs and dance.  Apple cider is to ensure fertility but the wassail is also now incorporated into our  tradition as a warm cup of Christmas Cheer.

The placement of Hanukkah is tied to both the lunar and solar calendars. It begins on the 25th of Kislev, three days before the new moon closest to the Winter Solstice. It commemorates an historic event — the Maccabees’ victory over the Greeks and the rededication of the temple at Jerusalem. But the form of this celebration, a Festival of Lights (with candles at the heart of the ritual), makes Hanukkah wonderfully compatible with other celebrations at this time of year. As a symbolic celebration of growing light and as a commemoration of spiritual rebirth, it also seems closely related to other observances.

There has been a lot of flack the past few days over a Holiday lights out in West Hollywood by Ms. Mary Loomis-Shrier, which is seen by some (since Mary Loomis-Shrier is of the Jewish faith).  As some kind of defection in the “War on Christmas”… First of all there are many other things to be in war over besides Christmas (Remembering that “Peace on Earth Good will to man” thing here). Maybe this is a special time we should all just try and stay true to the reason for the season.  As it has come to use as a combination of many wonderful traditions… It is, I think most would agree, a most beautiful time for all.  I know of Hebrew families who feel like they are forced to keep their Christmas Tree in the basement for fear of offending their friends and family.  Wouldn’t it be great if everyone would just loosen their bullets a little and have a wonderful time in this most magic of all seasons of the year.

Samhain Supreme

At this time of year no one wants to run the risk of sounding mundane and so when we speak of Halloween it might be a good idea also cover the eight Sabbats of the Pagan year, the most important Samhain October 31st being Supreme. (pronounced SOW-In)… Halloween, the time to honor the dead. And also the time witches celebrate the New Year.

Next is December 21st Yule or the winter Solstice, the shortest day of the year and the time the world turns back to sunlight. February 2nd is Imbolic or Candlemas, the first stirrings of Spring. Ostara (OH-shar-uh) March 21st the Spring Equinox. Beltane (Beal-tain) is May Day the feast of fun and fertility of the coming harvest and a tradition time of the Handfasting ceremony. Litha June 21st Midsummer also a popular time in the Handfasting tradition.. It is the longest day and filled with the abundance of summer. Then is the first festival of the harvest Lughnasadh (LOO-nah-sah) August 1st. And the last holiday in the pagan calendar is Mabon (MAH-bawn September 21 the Autumn Equinox.

None, however, is as important as Samhain, not only the time finale harvest but also the time to honor the dead as well as the celebration of the New Year. In the pagan tradition it’s like the New Year, Christmas, and Easter all rolled into one. Its also celebrated as a secular holiday and among most Christians and those of Jewish faiths as indicated by candy sales which are second only to Christmas. For Christians Halloween is literally the “eve of Hallow” preceding the Christian Celebration of “All Souls Day” and the “Day of the Dead” November 2nd So the fact of the matter is that Halloween carries a very large umbrella which finds wider connections to the faith based communities than just about any other festive occasion in any faith. Making it a favorite among all the secular celebrations… Personally It’s always been my favorite .

So we will more often than not use the words Halloween and Samhain interchangeable but I think most understand the difference between the secular and the religious meaning still it does not change the manner of the celebration itself which is free for all fun! 13 Principles

Circa 1973-74 Carl Llewellyn Weschcke & company 13 Principles of the Wiccan Belief: The following was drawn up in 1974 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. As Wiccans have no centralized religious headquarters, this “Council” does not speak for all Wiccans. Many Wiccans though, view these thirteen principals as representative of their beliefs.

We practice rites to attune ourselves with the natural rhythm of life forces marked by the phases of the Moon and the seasonal Quarters and Cross Quarters.

We recognize that our intelligence gives us a unique responsibility toward our environment. We seek to live in harmony with Nature, in ecological balance offering fulfillment to life and consciousness within an evolutionary concept.

We acknowledge a depth of power far greater than that apparent to the average person. Because it is far greater than ordinary it is sometimes called “supernatural”, but we see it as lying within that which is naturally potential to all.

We conceive of the Creative Power in the universe as manifesting through polarity-as masculine and feminine-and that this same Creative Power lies in all people, and functions through the interaction of the masculine and feminine. We value neither (gender) above the other, knowing each to be supportive to the other. This next section of #4 is often omited in recent copies, partly because of residual puritanical beliefs in the public and in some modern Witches, and partly because it is often misunderstood: We value sex as pleasure, as the symbol and embodiment of life, and as one of the sources of energies used in magickal practice and religious worship.

We recognize both outer worlds and inner, of psychological, worlds sometimes known as the Spiritual World, the Collective Unconscious, Inner Planes, etc.-and we see in the inter-action of these two dimensions the basis for paranormal phenomena and magickal exercises. We neglect neither dimension for the other, seeing both as necessary for our fulfillment.

We do not recognize any authoritarian hierarchy, but do honor those who teach, respect those who share their greater knowledge and wisdom, and acknowledge those who have courageously given of themselves in leadership.

We see religion, magick and wisdom in living as being united in the way one views the world and lives within it-a world view and philosophy of life which we identify as Witchcraft-the Wiccan Way.

Calling oneself “Witch” does not make a Witch-but neither does heredity itself, nor the collecting of titles, degrees and initiations. A Witch seeks to control the forces within her/himself that make life possible in order to live wisely and well without harm to other and in harmony with Nature.

We believe in the affirmation and fulfillment of life in a continuation of evolution and development of consciousness giving meaning to the Universe we know and our personal role within it.

Our only animosity towards Christianity, or toward any other religion or philosophy of life, is to the extent that its institutions have clamed to be “the only way” and have sought to deny freedom to others and to suppress other ways of religious practice and belief.

As American Witches, we are not threatened by debates on the history of the Craft, the origins of various terms, the legitimacy of various aspects of different traditions. We are concerned with our present and our future.

We do not accept the concept of absolute evil, nor do we worship any entity known as “Satan” or “the Devil”, as defined by Christian tradition. We do not seek power through the suffering of others, nor accept that personal benefit can be derived only by denial to another.

We believe that we should seek within Nature that which is contributory to our health and well-being.
